September 2, 2000 - Motivated by the beat

Life goes on. I have returned from my employment-based sojourn into Detroit to the bloody heat of Austin. For an orignally east coast kind-of-guy, this weather is terrible. No rain; no weather; in fact, nothing but sun and heat. Do people really get used to this?

Obviously its been a while - a whole summer. A few things have changed. For example, I'm wearing contacts now. ..or at least trying to. We'll see how long this lasts.

In other news, I discovered my friend Jon was an extra and head production accountant for the 1996 Film "Milk & Money" staring Calista Flockhart (Ally McBeal). Most importantly, this gives him a Bacon number of 2 (as Calista stared in a film with Kevin Bacon soon after this release). The film is a rather charming romantic comedy, and one I look forward to seeing again. And yes, of course I'm thinking what the best way to get into a film with Jon is (for the extreme though singular purpose of having a Bacon number of 3.

Seems Labor Day weekend is fast approaching. I know this on account of the number of sales fliers I received in the mail today. Does anyone else work on Labor Day? What kind of national holiday is this? Whatever. Looks like I will be heading down to Mars music though - on account of the 80% off sale .. gotta love those closeouts on musical instruments. My guitar could use a new set of strings, and my drumset has been thinking about a new cymbal and hi-hat combo for a week; so it seems all is going as planned in the retail-consumer world this weekend.

Ann, an old friend, wrote me rather spontaneously tonight. We compared notes. Part of the conversation went like:

Ann: So what ever happened with you and Laurel?
Me: We broke up a few years ago.
Ann: Glad to hear you stopped being wishy washy.
Me: Yes - it was a good thing; what ever happened with you and Greg?
    Ann: That's so funny!
    Me: What?
Ann: We broke up years ago..
So much for love in the 90's.

Spoke to my friend Watson tonight. I was delighted to discover she's not going to be evicted from her upper-westside manhattan apartment. Being homeless in New York is one of the worst things I can think of. Granted she had friends and her family to fall back on, but the situation (which wasn't really her fault) was resolved.

Yes - there is a reason I'm writing, after 3.5 months of zero entries. It's to say I'm back. And I'm pretty happy about being fairly stable in Austin. Doing as much travel as I was doing can put a damper on one's social and web presence. And it's also on account of JournalCon coming up. I seriously wouldn't want to be the person there who has to admit he hasn't updated his site in months.. especially since, according to the diary history project I had one of the earliest entries into the world of online journalling. :) And lastly, I must admit I was inspired by the site of a Ms. Jennifer Wade of San Francisco.

So I'm back to Austin, going to JournalCon, and until then, doing the day job, and catching up on as many relationships that I've let linger since May. I am rather happy to have such receptive friends. (thanks penny, jeff, todd, jon, josh, etc.)
